Identification of learning needs and opportunities

Learners need to have a realistic understanding of the opportunities that are open to them. The teacher is an influential source of knowledge in their own specialist area and can help learners to open their minds to different career routes.  At the same time, learners and teachers need to identify the support which will underpin successful learning programmes.

In this section, there are examples of resources developed for specific vocational areas that teachers can adapt or develop for their own specialist areas. These resources help to convey a range of career opportunities that exist and challenge stereotypes. They include:

  • activities that can help learners to find out about careers for themselves
  • an activity that helps learners and teachers to identify their transferable skills so that they can plan a successful personalised learning programme.

Effective learner-centred initial assessment underpins successful personalised learning programmes. Go to Assessment for learning for a range of resources to support initial assessment.

Teachers need to be aware of the range of support that is accessible to learners with additional learning needs, and their organisation’s responsibilities and policies with respect to supporting disabilities. Technology can provide significant assistance. Take a look at the eCPD website for advice about using technology to support learning needs.
